So i have been getting kind of obsessed with my weight recently and as much as i try to hide it, i think its obvious.I have no one to speak to, trust me you dont know my situation.Anyway since i was five i’ve been thinking about weight, i am now 13 years old!When i was five i first weighed myself only to discover i was 20kg i felt horrible.I then weighed myself at six after being constantly being called ‘fat’, only then did i discover that i’d actually ballooned to 28kg so i dieted all the way to 21kg and at the age of seven i was skin and bone.I refused to eat through the winter holidays abroad and i loved the new slim me. I was at a healthy weight till year five when i was ten and became 30kg i hated myself for it and wanted to lose weight, it didnt happen. THEN i became eleven and it was weigh day at school and all my friends were 33 or 34 kg i was 35 and being overly obsessed about my weight, i once again went on a diet.I began thinking that i was not that fat for the time in between and i relaxed eating everything from icecreams to fruits to chocolates to crisps to big meals in the summer holidays of 2009, i was twelve.It was only when i saw a video my dad had tooken of me on a bike that everything was torn apart. At 4’9 i was a whopping 48kg, i knew i had gained weight and i finally had the courage to face up to the scales. I was shocked, if i didnt lose weight i would eventually hit 50kg which would be devastating. Still in a state of shock i went to extreme measures to slim down. My dad had openly said i looked kind of fat to me and my mum would tell me to cut back on the eating from time to time! I starved myself for 24hours every day only having a meal at 3 o clock and i was ecstatic when i went down to 42kg after my holiday in morrocco, my pictures were disgusting and they pushed me forward to lose more, by then i was 4’11 and people were commenting on how slim i looked. I had once again acheived the weight loss satisfaction. My parents tried to stop me losing weight which made me angry because i still had the ‘fat’ image in my mind. I eventually stopped and my weight steadied. I would often gain 2lb or so but i quickly lost it in fear of gaining weight! I have to say last summer was the biggest wake up call for me and since then i have dreaded all forms of holidays and chances to eat. Im always dieting, sometimes i starve for two weeks, eat for a week starve for a week, but all of a sudden my mum bribed me, she said she wouldnt take me to the gym unless i eat atleast 1000 cals a day, so after a week of starving i opted for a week of eating AND going to the gym everyday.Mum only gave me a weeks membership though so im back on a diet now. Im 4’11 and a half or 5 foot and about 43kg, am i slightly chubby, what would be considered slim, because i know for a fact im NOT slim!!?All advice appreciated, thanks XD XD

OK so the clue to solving this easily and with as little stress as possible is to forget about the ‘weight’ part straight away. You’re more aware of your body shape and size that ever before so concentrate on that, and I’ll show you how in a second.

How do I become a vegetarian?

I’ve been raised to eat meat but have always felt incredibly guilty about it even as a child. I have been changing my diet for weight loss since march and now eat every healthy and am successfully losing weight slowly (a pound a week). I don’t eat much meat anymore (I have lean turkey in my sandwiches and chicken caesar salads at restaurants sometimes but thats pretty much it).

I also don’t want to be one of those vegetarians that looks like a corpse, so first off what would be a good LOW CALORIE alternative to turkey meat, something lean please (I know yves has meatless turkey but its 100 calories for 4 slices and my current turkey is 45 calories for 6 slices, is there anything lower than yves thats meatless).

What are some other good meat alternatives so I don’t lose out on my protein? (I plan to still eat eggs and dairy products).

What are some healthy meatless things to order at restaurants besides veggie burgers, as restaurants don’t have them all the time.

How do I deal with unsupportive family members? I know my mom will worry like crazy for health reasons she is convinced that if I go vegetarian I will become anemic, is she right?

Actually being a vegetarian requires more sacrifice that people think. You can get the same benefits of a vegetarian diet by eating healthy everyday. Vegetarian people often support other causes such as animal cruelty or global warming.So first you should go to a nutritionist so she can give you an appropriate diet plan that will work for you, with a wrong diet you are vulnerable to gain weight, suffer from anaemia and even faint, as ur mom said. Then you should begin to take an iron supplement which will be prescribed by the nutritionist. After that just be aware on how your body reacts to this change. Soy is an excellent source of iron and protein, same with the grains. If you follow all the indications u should be able to live a healthy life just as any other person, being a vegetarian reduces chances of getting cancer. :)

i know that when you are a vegetarian eating out can be a real problem sometimes, but almost all the restaurant have vegetarian choices and you can always order something like pasta or pizza , it should be even easier if you are up to eating eggs and dairy.

All my family are meat lovers so you can imagine their reaction when i told them i didnt want to eat meat anymore, just give ur mom sometime to get used to the idea, printing some vegetarian recipes will show her your commitment and will help her a lot when she is cooking. Tell her to go with you to the nutritionist so she can hear there is nothing wrong with this kind of diet, its actually very thoughfull with the global warming :)

I used to train people and the best advice I can give you is, if it is processed don’t eat it. This is hard because eating foods that are not processed or out of a package is convenient. It may be time consuming when it comes to preparation but fresh is best. Eat 5-6 small well balanced meals a day, and lots of water!!! I can’t stress that enough, one glass every hour. You should always have a bottle of water with you. As far as snacks go, almonds are great. This is not easy at first but well worth it, because the feeling you will have when the weight starts coming off is awesome. Don’t give up, if you are feeling pain about how you look use that to drive you, pain is a great motivator.

I am currently on Setraline, I have been on these since Nov 2010. I am 14 stone and need to loose weight. I do currently excersize, but generally need a little help. Vitamin supplements are best avoided. In the UK at least deficiencies are rare and there is neither need nor therapeutic advantage in taking supplements. Recently there has been increasing concerns about what is effectively overdosing on synthetic vitamins. The fat soluble vitamins are the most potentially toxic, A to the eye, D to the kidney K to the blood clotting mechanism and E appears to increase all cause mortality. The most recent, and one of the most worrying papers concerns women taking multivitamins. There appears to be an associated 19% increase in the risk of breast cancer in women on multivitamin tablets, though further investigation is required to confirm that the risk is causal.

Studying Abroad and Weight Loss?

Even though I am so excited to leave the country to study abroad in a month, I am a little worried about my progress and how I will continue.

I am going to Spain (leaving from the good ol’ northeast), where I have heard the food is a mixture of a lot of influences. Basically, heaven… but, stuff I try to limit. Here, I am able to limit what I eat, count out 1500-1700 calories a day, and exercise 6 days a week. I am worried that when I get there and am living on my own in another country with little money, the healthy food is going to go out the window.

As far as exercise, I will probably be walking more than I do at my regular college and especially more than I do now while at home (mostly sedentary right now except exercise, while at school I am moderately active plus exercise).

I was just wondering if anyone had any advice about how to adapt to another culture without giving into all the amazing foods all the time, and how to adapt to another culture’s exercise routine/options? Maybe other people have studied abroad/travelled abroad and have had these same concerns? Maybe I should just limit calorie-counting and just focus on eating when I’m hungry and stopping when I’m full… or if it might be easier to keep it up this lifestyle change then I think?

My best friend studied abroad in Spain. She did a homestay, and often her host mother would cook potatoes in oil.. As in boiled potatoes, cooked in oil instead of water. She said this was thematic – as you suspect, everything is very rich in olive oil.

However, you WILL have options. I think if you focus on eating when you’re hungry and stopping when you’re full, and avoiding things that are obviously super caloric like fried chicken (poor example, I know) then you will be fine. Avoid the churros, or enjoy in moderation :)

Breakfast in Spain is quite simple, and lunch is MUCH later. Same with dinner. Also, many meals are tapas style, so you can really pick and choose.

And also, a lot of the fat used is olive oil, as opposed to butter, which is a heart healthy oil.

Spain is one of the healthier countries out there — just have fun and enjoy life there!

I have recently become vegan .. I dont want to ever touch any animals foods again… my parents are concierned because of my weight loss and that I am not eating right… I am 17, 111, 5″4.5 … They keep begging me to eat more protein, and healthy foods. I eat alot of veggies and fruit. I dont eat any artifical foods or fast food crap. I exercise twice a day for 2 hours… What foods are high in protein???
